Allonia Bostick Moon

Mrs. Allonia Bostick Moon was born in Covington, Georgia, on June 24, 1931, to the late King and Lillie Mae [Benton] Bostick. Her beloved husband, Dea. Howard Joe Moon; her brothers, Andrew and Tully Bostick; and her sisters, Rosanna Bostick Henderson and Dorothy Bostick, all preceded her in death. In the early 1930s, Allonia’s parents joined the Wesley Chapel Church in Covington, where she also became a member at an early age. She was active in church activities from childhood. She performed with her older siblings, Andrew and Rosanna, as a vocal trio, which was featured on a local radio broadcast on Atlanta’s WCON. Her father, King, accompanied his son and daughters on the piano. Allonia received her early education in Newton County schools and graduated from the historic Washington Street High School in 1952. She earned her nursing license in Rome, Georgia, at Battey State Hospital, a national forerunner in tuberculosis treatment in the 1950s. After graduation, she continued to work at Battey. Later, she cared for seniors at Habersham Homes, a skilled nursing facility at Habersham County Medical Center, where in 1992 she was honored as “Nurse of the Year.” It was in Rome, Georgia, that she met her future husband, Howard Joe Moon who was working as a cook at Battey State Hospital. They married at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Covington, Georgia, on January 28, 1961, with Rev. I. J. Watson of Springfield Missionary Baptist Church officiating. Their union was blessed by the birth of a precious baby girl, Lillie Artis Vanita. Allonia became a devoted member of Springfield Missionary Baptist Church and served the church in various roles: communion stewardess, chair of the finance committee, Sunday school teacher and superintendent, vacation bible school principal, and member of the pastor’s aid committee. In 2002, she was crowned “Miss Springfield” as the first-place winner at the annual Women’s Day program and fundraiser. She was active in the Greater Northwestern Baptist Association of Georgia, Women's Missionary Society, and was director of the Baptist Training Union at Springfield. She attended services faithfully until declining health limited her Participation. Allonia cherished celebrating special occasions with family and friends, good food, and fellowship, and she hosted many memorable events. Her special sweet potato soufflé was so popular with her guests that they cleaned the dish—there were never any leftovers. Allonia’s alto voice added harmony to the Bostick family’s Christmas tradition of singing carols around the piano after dinner. Since they often struggled to remember all the verses of the “Twelve Days of Christmas,” family members would readily substitute their own words, much to everyone’s amusement. Allonia was widely known in the Lula community for her interest and activism in local affairs. Notably, she organized the first chapter of Camp Fire Girls, Inc. at Lula Elementary School. In 1976, she aided in conducting a door-to-door survey of community attitudes for the Lula Area Business Association and the Lula City Council. In May 1980, the National Housewives’ League Inc. and the Zeta Phi Lambda Sorority for Christian Women selected her as “Mother of the Year.” Allonia Bostick Moon will be forever loved and remembered by her daughter, Dr. Vanita Moon; granddaughter, Dr. Kierra Pryor; sisters, Kathryn Williams, Emma Bostick, and Margaret Wimberley; a special loving niece, the late Maedell Varner; and a host of other relatives and friends.
