Robert James Dowell

The Life and Legacy of Robert James Dowell June 2, 1941 – August 7, 2026 Robert James Dowell was born on June 2, 1941, in Covington, Tennessee, to the late Annie Laura Dowell and Donald Ray Dowell. From humble beginnings, Robert's life would become a testimony of hard work, devotion to family, faithful service, and perseverance. Robert received his education and graduated from Frazier Higher School. Following graduation, he answered the call to serve his country by entering the United States Armed Forces. He served honorably and, upon completing his military service, was honorably discharged. After returning home, Robert entered the workforce and began establishing a life marked by dedication and responsibility. He later relocated to Gainesville, Georgia, where a new and beautiful chapter of his life began. It was there that Robert fell in love with Mattie Lou "Tootsie" Pickens, and the two were united in marriage. Their union was blessed with a beautiful family of six daughters and three sons. Robert loved his family deeply and took great pride in the generations that came after him. Robert continued his professional career with Milliken, where he was known for his strong work ethic, dependability, and commitment. He understood the value of an honest day's work and carried that same spirit of dedication into every area of his life. His commitment extended beyond his home and workplace into his church. Robert was a long term faithful member of St. John Baptist Church, where he served diligently, even as the church custodian for more than 15 years. His service was more than simply a responsibility—it was an expression of his love for his church and his willingness to serve wherever he was needed. Even while facing significant health challenges, Robert continued to work and faithfully serve his church. He demonstrated remarkable strength and perseverance until he was blessed to receive a kidney transplant. Through life's difficulties, Robert continued pressing forward, leaving behind an example of endurance, faithfulness, and determination. On August 7, 2026, Robert peacefully transitioned from this earthly life while surrounded by the love and presence of his family. Robert was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mattie Dowell; his parents, Annie Laura and Donald Ray Dowell; his brothers, Bobby Lee Dowell and James Dowell; and his sister, Lois Dowell Stilt. He leaves to cherish his memory his siblings, Margaret Foster, Jerry Dowell, Annie (TJ) Jones, and Yvonne (Jessie) Sangter, Bessie Mae Dowell; brother-in-law, Jeffery Goss; sisters-in-law, Beverly Reed and Lillian Goss; and his beloved children, Terri (Stanley) Taylor, Pamela Faye Dowell, Robert (Toi) Dowell Jr, Comfort Dowell, Stacy (Andrea) Hunter, Pamela Wilmont, Stacy Pickens, Rita (Michael) Walker, and Sonia Bell. Robert's legacy also lives on through his twenty-three grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended relatives, church family, and dear friends whose lives were touched by his presence. Robert James Dowell lived a life that demonstrated the importance of family, service, hard work, faithfulness, and perseverance. Though his earthly journey has come to an end, the love he gave, the family he helped build, the work of his hands, and the years he faithfully served will remain a lasting part of his legacy. A life of service has ended, but a legacy of love continues through every life he touched.
